30 lessons from solo ride of 20310 kms in 100 days

 

1. Restrict your speed to less than 90 kmph at any given point, no matter how smooth the road is

2. Compulsory break every 100 kms — take more breaks if need be, tea is great excuse and so is nature’s call

3. While riding no calls, no messages, no social media and no distractions

4. Only music you should ideally listen, is the music of the wind

5. Regular check your bike condition every 600 kms. Check your health every day.

6. Tank should never be empty — fill it full when you get a chance

7. Your bike will naturally follow the direction in which you look — it’s better to look ahead

8. There are some who are always in a rush — give way to such souls

9. Some roads are challenging — don’t get frustrated if you have to ride at 10 kmph

10. Carry all the necessary papers of yourself and your bike

11. No night riding — emergency excluded

12. Eat light but drink lots of fluid and I don’t mean alcohol.

13. Ask for directions from locals — many of them are really happy to help

14. Go slow and go with the flow — enjoy the journey more than the destination

15. Don’t ever think that you are smarter than the road, because you are not.

16. Learn to embrace uncertainties and unwanted surprises at every corner

17. Two senses (eyes and ears) have to be extremely sharp. Sharpen your reflexes if you can.

18. Make decisions based on facts but give equal importance to what your heart says — it somehow know the right direction

19. More than GPS listen to your gut

20. Rear mirror is there for a reason — use it generously

21. Look at the tires of the oncoming vehicle to avoid mishaps and legs of median jumpers

22. Some things are beyond your control (tire puncture, gear cables, getting lost, dead battery, lost signal, unplanned stops) — learn to deal with it with quick thinking

23. Your bum will numb — get used to it

24. Pack only essentials and leave the rest.

25. Trucks have a sign “HORN OK PLEASE” — they are expecting you to honk. Otherwise use horn sparingly.

26. Wear all safety gear at all times while riding — clear visor is good for night riding while tinted is good during the day

27. If you really what to do sightseeing — I suggest you pullover, soak in the view and then start rolling.

28. Sleep well and start early

29. Never skip your breakfast. Light lunch, light dinner and occasional fruits.

30. Carry a first-aid kit for yourself and tool kit for your bike.
